How to Celebrate Galentine's Day
Four girls in pajamas

Valentine’s Day: You either love it or hate it. When you’re in a relationship, it can be exciting to shower your significant other with presents and spend a romantic evening togetherBut when you’re single, the thought of the happy couples celebrating the Day of Love can be a little disheartening — but it doesn’t have to be! Get together with your other single girlfriends and celebrate your friendship and love for each other (no sweetheart required). Turn a lonely Valentine’s Day into a memorable Galentine’s Day with a special evening filled with gifts, activities, and good company.

Tips for rocking Galentine's Day

Galentine’s Activities

Going out can be a little difficult due to the busyness of the holiday and pandemic closures, so why not host a get-together at home? When you plan this with your girlfriends, you can ask them: “Would you prefer to get all glammed-up and fancy? Or would you prefer to stay comfy and cozy in our sweatpants?”

Slumber Party

When was the last time you had a sleepover with your best girlfriends? Relive the best part of middle school by laying sleeping bags, pillows, and blankets on the floor for a giant slumber party. Wear cozy pajamas, turn on a chick flick (we LOVE 13 Going on 30Confessions of a Shopaholic, and While You Were Sleeping), and snack on buttery popcorn and chocolate. Don’t forget to play sleepover games like Truth or Dare and Would You Rather!

Hollywood Glam

Dress code details: “Wear something in your closet that you NEVER get the chance to wear!” This is the perfect time to put on your old high school prom dress (fingers crossed that it still fits...) and other fancy outfits that you rarely wear because they’re not exactly office dress code. Spend extra time on your hair and makeup, maybe try that winged eyeliner and cut crease eyeshadow because you will definitely take lots of pictures. Hand out awards and you can even make cheesy, heartfelt (or silly) acceptance speeches.

Around the World in an Evening

With the pandemic going on, it’s probably accurate to say that you haven’t been on vacation in a while. There’s no need to hop on a plane when you can bring foreign countries right to your own kitchenAsk each of your friends to pick a country, dress up like that country (think: berets for France, brightly colored dresses for Mexicoetc.), and make a traditional dish from that region. While the dinner will probably be a hodgepodge of random appetizers and entrees, it will be exciting to try new dishes and experience other cultures — without the jet lag and language barriers!

Fondue Night

Skip the expensive restaurant and try making a gourmet meal at home with your gal pals. Make two separate fondues, one cheese and one milk chocolate. For the savory fondue, grab skewers and dip an assortment of meats, veggies, and breads into the melted cheese goodness. For the dessert fondue, you can dip nearly every fruit and sweet breads for a delicious end to your meal. Turn down the lights, play classical music, and spend the evening pretending that you’re at a 5-star restaurant...instead of in your dark kitchen with your friends.

Game Night

When was the last time you took a break from the movie nights and dusted off the board games? That’s right...pull out every game that you have buried in your closet, like Twister, Monopoly, Cover Your Assets, and Uno. Make it a little more competitive and offer incentives to the winner of each game. Beforehand, grab cheap prizes, like candy, bath bombs, and gift cards, so there will be more incentive to win. No cheating!

Galentine’s Gifts

On V-Day, couples give each other typical presents like fine jewelry, bouquets of roses, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t exchange gifts on Galentine’s Day, right? It can be exciting to receive a gift from a friend on an occasion that’s not Christmas or your birthday, and it’s even more fun to spend time finding the perfect gift — one she will actually use and love.
